SPJ/LA Announces 2022 Scholarship Awards

The Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is pleased to announce the six recipients of its 2022 Scholarship Awards for Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties. Each of these student honorees provided examples of excellent work, received exceptional recommendations and demonstrated a desire to pursue a career in news journalism.

Here are the award recipients:

 

The Ken Inouye Memorial Scholarship for media diversity ($1,500) has been awarded to Kamryn Bouyett, a student at Cal State University Long Beach and previously Pierce College, who looks "forward to being a professional journalist reporting on what matters and sharing stories of people who look like you and me."

 

The Richard D. Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship to increase newsroom diversity ($2,000) has been awarded to Saumya Gupta, a UCLA Communications major and National News and Higher Education Editor at the Daily Bruin, has been accepted into UC Berkeley's Masters program in Journalism. She says, "I hope to work in narrative and investigative writing."

 
 

The Helen Johnson Memorial Scholarship ($1,500), which assists college students pursuing careers in broadcast journalism, has been awarded to Vanessa Garcia, a student at Cal State University Northridge. She has been accepted into the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and is "working toward starting my career as a multimedia journalist to report news within local levels, as my heart initially belongs to covering intimate human interest stories that present diversity."

 
 

The Carl Greenberg Memorial Scholarship ($1,500) for investigative or political reporting has been awarded to Samantha Torre, a student at Pepperdine University and the incoming news editor at the Pepperdine Graphic newspaper. She says "What interests me more than just policy reporting, however, is reporting on the day to day effects those policies have on everyday people."

 
 

The Bill Farr Memorial Scholarship ($1,500), which helps aspiring journalists, has been awarded to Kiana Kalahele, a student at Chapman University, where she is a News Reporter for The Panther and writer for the Voice of OC who "would love to work as an entertainment investigations reporter."

 
 

The Nonprofit Communications and Media Network's Lisa A. Davidson Memorial Scholarship ($1,500), which supports aspiring journalists, has been awarded to Jonathan Bigall, a student at Cal State University Long Beach and a reporter for The Daily 49er who hopes "to become a news reporter in the Los Angeles area." He has taken the lead in establishing an SPJ Chapter at CSU Long Beach.
