SPJ/LA Announces 2021 Scholarship Awards

The Society of Professional Journalists Los Angeles (SPJ/LA) is pleased to announce the six recipients of its 2021 Scholarship Awards for Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties. Each of these student honorees provided examples of work excellence, received exceptional recommendations and demonstrated a desire to pursue a career in news journalism.

Here are the award recipients:

The Richard D. Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship to increase newsroom diversity ($2,000) has been awarded to Richard Tzul, a student at Cal State Los Angeles where he was the news managing editor at the University Times and an intern at Politico. This fall Richard will be a student at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

The Nonprofit Communications and Media Network's Lisa A. Davidson Memorial Scholarship ($1,500), which supports aspiring journalists, has been awarded to Lisi Burciaga, who is a student at Cal State Fullerton after transferring from Pasadena City College where she was editor-in-chief at The Courier. (This scholarship is supported by contributions to the Ruth Collander Endowment Fund.)

The Helen Johnson Memorial Scholarship($1,500), which assists college students pursuing careers in broadcast journalism, has been awarded to Yuki Liang, a USC student and radio producer at Annenberg Radio News, who aspires to work in public radio.

The Ken Inouye Memorial Scholarship for media diversity ($1,500) has been awarded to Anthony Bautista, a student at Cal State Fullerton and assistant sports editor at the Daily Titan, who is looking to enter the field of sports journalism as a reporter.

The Carl Greenberg Memorial Scholarship($1,500) for investigative or political reporting has been awarded to Angelina Hicks, a student at Chapman University and politics editor at The Panther. Hicks’ goal is to cover local government, public affairs and civic life.

The Bill Farr Memorial Scholarship ($1,500), which helps aspiring journalists, has been awarded to Tess Kazenoff, a journalism student at Cal State Long Beach, who is currently a breaking news intern at the Long Beach Post and was previously the editor in chief at Long Beach City College’s Viking News.
