SPJ/LA to Premiere Distinguished Journalists Awards Virtual Ceremony on Nov. 4.

The Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will hold its 45th Annual Distinguished Journalists Awards in a virtual ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.

Join us online to celebrate the achievements of our Distinguished Journalists.

The honorees are longtime regional journalists working in print, television, radio and digital media. They are: David Allen, columnist for the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin; Irfan Khan, staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times; Toni Guinyard, reporter with NBC4; Josie Huang, reporter with 89.3 KPCC and LAist; and Tami Abdollah, former senior tech reporter for dot.LA and now a national correspondent for USA TODAY.

The Freedom of Information award will go to Nora Benavidez of the nonprofit advocacy group Free Press, where she is senior counsel and director, digital justice and civil rights. Benavidez was PEN America's director of U.S. Free Expression Programs.

The ceremony will be emceed by KABC 790’s Frank Mottek, an SPJ/LA board member and a past Distinguished Journalist honoree.

The Distinguished Journalist Award, created in 1976, honors journalists who have achieved a record of accomplishment over a number of years. The award recognizes journalists in television, radio, digital media, newspapers with a circulation of 90,000 or more, and newspapers with a circulation of less than 90,000.

The Freedom of Information Award goes to people – typically not journalists — who have championed freedom of the press and helped further the free flow of information.

We look forward to sharing with you the stories of these inspiring honorees. The ceremony serves as a fundraiser for SPJ/LA, with proceeds going toward its student scholarship program.

Because of COVID-19, SPJ/LA decided out of an abundance of caution to hold the ceremony virtually this year.

RSVP at the link below and look for a Zoom link in your email inbox a few days before the Nov. 4 event.
